Children who are ill or who are in hospital often need special care and support to help them cope. Our paediatric psychologists are specially trained to offer help to these children and families. Their help reduces psychological distress and helps maximise treatment outcomes. They assess and treat children with a wide range of conditions, such as those listed below:


  • Chronic conditions, such as diabetes and cystic fibrosis
  • Treatment-related anxieties and phobias (e.g. needles)
  • Severe feeding problems
  • Asthma, migraine and persistent abdominal pain
  • Pain management
  • Preparation for medical procedures (e.g. dialysis)
  • Support to children who are terminally ill


Paediatric psychologists also undertake the following tasks:


• Training, consultation and advice to medical staff
• Audit, evaluation and research

Paediatric Feeding Disorders

Midlands Psychology offers a unique service to help children overcome clinical feeding problems by providing comprehensive, multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment services, ranging from advice and support to community healthcare professionals to highly specialist in-patient programmes. We also offer training to professionals who work with children with feeding problems and their families. Our research record is second to none.

Specialist Feeding Service

Midlands Psychology has a well established research partnership with Dr Terry Dovey of Brunel University, who is an internationally known expert on children's feeding disorders. Our clinical team has pioneered intensive in-patient treatment for tube-weaning and other severe feeding disorders. We offer a full range of services to children, families and other professionals involved in their care, including:


  • Training and consultation services for other professionals in the management of feeding disorders
  • Comprehensive, multi-disciplinary assessment of complex feeding problems, detailed report and treatment recommendations
  • Out-patient intervention programmes
  • Intensive in-patient treatment
